Week of February 29 to March 4, 2016 Dear Parents, It has been another wonderful week in second grade. Here are a few upcoming events and a message from Ms. McKenna about the music program. Tuesday, March 1 is the One World, One Night celebration from 5:30 to 8:00 Wednesday, March 2 is an early release day. This is also Read Across America Day.  We will be spending some time that day just reading.   Thursday, March 3 is the second grade music presentation. (below is a message from Ms. McKenna) Hello parents! To celebrate Music in Our Schools Month and Youth Art Month, second grade students will be performing Yo Leonardo! , a music program that highlights the contributions of several visual artists. Performances will be on Thursday, March 3rd during the school day and in the evening. Students should please report to their hallway lines outside the cafeteria at 5:30pm . Week of February 22, 2016 Dear Parents, What a wonderful week in second grade. Thank you for returning the parent reflection for our "How We Express Ourselves" unit of inquiry.  I truly enjoyed having all the parents here to listen to the student poetry.  Please mark you calendar for the second grade music performance to be held Thursday, March 3 in the evening.  The students have been practicing and sound wonderful. I can wait to see them. What is happening in the classroom: Science/Social Studies: We have started our unit of inquiry "Where We Are in Place and Time".  The central idea is: Human and geographic factors affect communities.  We are inquiring into the relationship between geographic features and communities.  We are learning about the different types of maps and why communities are settled in certain place and not in others.  We will be looking at how weather and climate affect where people settle, too. Math: We are learning about regrouping
Week of February 15, 2016 Dear Parents, I hope you enjoy the three day weekend.  I will see the students on Tuesday.  Thank you so much to all who were able to come to the "Poet Tea".  It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm for sharing poetry all around the room. I will be sending home the students' poetry collections along with a parent input form. Please sit with your child and complete the parent input form and return it to me by Friday.  Please count this on the homework log.  Your input it greatly appreciated and will help the teachers plan for this unit next year.  Students were very creative with their poetry.  I enjoyed listening to variety of poems. Week of 2-8-16 Dear Parents, We have an exciting week coming up.  Don't forget students will be presenting their creative poetry at our Poet Tea on Friday, February 12 from 10:30 to 11:15.  Our Valentine's Day party will also be on Friday from 1;00 to 2:00.  Please make sure to send a Valentine for each student.  A list of student names was sent home with the party letter.  Students will need to make a valentine container to bring in on Friday. What's happening in the classroom: Science/Social Studies: We will be finishing up our look at magnetism and patterns of movement.  We will be moving into our next unit of inquiry Where We Are in Place and Time.  The unit is all about communities.  The rules within a community, why people settle where they settle, how weather affects settlement and how settlements are developed.  SHHH! We use Minecraft.edu for our summative project. Math: We are continuing to learn about multiplication as groups of, arrays and the relation
