Week of September 29, 2014  Dear Parents, It was such a wonderful experience meeting and conferencing with every family. Thank you so much for taking your time to come to the conference.  I hope you enjoyed reading your child's goals.  The students put a great deal of thought into writing their goals.  It will be a wonderful reflection tool to see each child's growth at the end of the year.   This week in science/social studies: The students are creating commercials about being a good citizen.  We will start filming them on Monday.  We will be ending the week with our final project for are unit of inquiry "Who We Are".  Students will create a puzzle person with each piece representing a role in the student's life.  The puzzle will be put together to represent the central idea "Who we are involves many different roles."   This week in math: We will continue are study of place value.  We have been learning about the different places and the value
Announcements for the week of September 22- 26 Dear Parents, I hope everyone has had an enjoyable week.  Second graders have been very busy this week. Students have been learning about citizenship and the qualities of good citizens.  This week, students will be working in groups to create a one minute commercial about what makes a good citizen. As a final project for graphs, students created graphs of their own choice.  This week students will be reflecting on how well they met the expectations for creating their graphs.  This is part of our PYP learner profile of being reflective about our learning. Students have started learning about place value.  We have been learning words like expanded notation and digit to build our mathematical vocabulary. We will continue with our study of place value for several weeks.  We have been working on greater than, less than, and equal to.  The students worked on a game for this concept and have a copy of the game in their Friday folders.  This w
Dear Parents, Week of September 15, 2014 The third week of second grade has been busy and full of learning.  In social studies and science, we continue to learn about "Who We Are" as scientists, historians, and good citizens.  We watched videos about different scientists and learned what different scientists do.  We studied two historical figures, Benjamin Franklin and Amelia Earhart, to learn what qualities good citizens have.  We will continue to study what it means to be a good citizen next week.  In math, students have been learning about bar graphs and picture graphs.  Students created their own graphs this week.  Students organized, gathered data, and created graphs to represent the data they collected.  This coming week, we will begin our study of place value and ordering numbers.  In reading, we have been building our stamina so that we can read independently for 30 minutes.  This week, I will be determining students' reading levels and students will continue t
Dear Parents, It has been another wonderful week with your students.  I am so happy to have your children in my class. This week we have been learning about ourselves as scientists, readers, writers, and mathematicians.  In science, we have started looking at what scientists do.  We will be learning about different scientists and discovering what they do.  In math, we have been learning about gather and organizing data into graphs.  We have created a birthday graph and a how we get home graph.  In writing, we have been learning about what writers do and learning about the tools writers use.  We will be working on the different ways writers get their ideas.  In reading, we are learning about what good readers do.  We have discussed and are practicing our stamina.
