Dear Parents,

Week of September 15, 2014
The third week of second grade has been busy and full of learning.  In social studies and science, we continue to learn about "Who We Are" as scientists, historians, and good citizens.  We watched videos about different scientists and learned what different scientists do.  We studied two historical figures, Benjamin Franklin and Amelia Earhart, to learn what qualities good citizens have.  We will continue to study what it means to be a good citizen next week.  In math, students have been learning about bar graphs and picture graphs.  Students created their own graphs this week.  Students organized, gathered data, and created graphs to represent the data they collected.  This coming week, we will begin our study of place value and ordering numbers.  In reading, we have been building our stamina so that we can read independently for 30 minutes.  This week, I will be determining students' reading levels and students will continue to build stamina.  In writing, we have been learning about different ways writers get ideas to write about.  This week, we will be writing goals for the upcoming student led conferences.

I have not been sending home work in the Friday folders in order for students to have work samples to look at to prepare their goals.  I will be also setting goals for students and sharing them with you at the conference.  You should have received a conference time confirmation in the Friday folder.  Please contact me if you did not receive yours.  I look forward to meeting with you all at conferences.

Please remember to check the PTA website for their newsletter formally known as the Spiceword.  Also, remember to check the enews folder each week.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
