Week of February 29 to March 4, 2016

Dear Parents,

It has been another wonderful week in second grade. Here are a few upcoming events and a message from Ms. McKenna about the music program.
Tuesday, March 1 is the One World, One Night celebration from 5:30 to 8:00
Wednesday, March 2 is an early release day. This is also Read Across America Day.  We will be spending some time that day just reading.
Thursday, March 3 is the second grade music presentation. (below is a message from Ms. McKenna)
Hello parents! To celebrate Music in Our Schools Month and Youth Art Month, second grade students will be performing Yo Leonardo!, a music program that highlights the contributions of several visual artists. Performances will be on Thursday, March 3rd during the school day and in the evening. Students should please report to their hallway lines outside the cafeteria at 5:30pm. The program will begin at 6:00pm.

We would love for the second graders to dress up like artists during the school day and at the evening program on March 3rd. Students should arrive at school in their artist attire. They should please wear all black clothing or black pants with an "artist white shirt" (old white shirt with splattered paint on it). Additional accessories may include aprons, paintbrushes in pockets, berets, etc. - feel free to be creative!

Please contact Tess McKenna if you have any questions. tess_mckenna@roundrockisd.org

What is happening in the classroom
Science/Social Studies:
Students have been working on Google presentations about different landforms. We will be deciding which landforms our community will need. We are also learning about how climate affect where people settle. Students will decide what type of climate our commuity will have. We will also be learning about government and government services. We will need to include these items in our community as well.

Math:
We have been learning different strategies to solve three digit additions and subtraction situations in problems solving. We have learned about using a number line, counting on, counting backwards, using a base ten model, breaking the numbers apart, and bridging to ten. We will continue with these strategies another week.

Writing:
We have been using mentor text to learn about persuasion. Students will be writing persuasive statements.

Reading:
We are learning about folktales, fairy tales, and legends. Students have been reading a variety of stories and have been learning to pick out the characters, setting, problem, solution, and moral of the stories. As a class, we have been reading different versions of the same story to compare the stories. We will continue with this next week.

Word work:
We have been working on a review of parts of speech. Next week we will be working on plurals and reviewing the high frequency word list. The text for list 4 will be next Friday, March 4.

Secret word of the week is climate

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms Hansen
