Week of February 22, 2016

Dear Parents,

What a wonderful week in second grade. Thank you for returning the parent reflection for our "How We Express Ourselves" unit of inquiry.  I truly enjoyed having all the parents here to listen to the student poetry.  Please mark you calendar for the second grade music performance to be held Thursday, March 3 in the evening.  The students have been practicing and sound wonderful. I can wait to see them.

What is happening in the classroom:

Science/Social Studies:
We have started our unit of inquiry "Where We Are in Place and Time".  The central idea is: Human and geographic factors affect communities.  We are inquiring into the relationship between geographic features and communities.  We are learning about the different types of maps and why communities are settled in certain place and not in others.  We will be looking at how weather and climate affect where people settle, too.

Math:
We are learning about regrouping to help us add and subtract larger numbers.  We have been learning how to take apart numbers into different amounts of tens and ones.  For example: 75 can be expressed as 75 ones or 1 ten and 65 ones etc.  This will help students understand the concept behind regrouping numbers.

Writing:
We are using mentor text to learn about how authors write persuasive pieces.  We are learning about how authors use reasons to support their positions.

Reading:
We have been reviewing the differences between fiction and non-fiction.  Next week we will be comparing different forms of the same folktales.

Word work:
We will continue with our look at parts of speech including conjunctions and prepositions.

Secret word: community

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
