How we Express Ourselves
Central Idea
Perspective  can impact how we express ideas.
An Inquiry Into:
  • How ideas are communicated
  • How perception shapes ideas
  • How culture influences expression

Language Arts

Reading:
We are introducing poetry!  We will learn how poets communicate ideas and participate in a poetry gallery walk  to explore what students see/think/wonder in each.  Students will be exposed to various poems throughout the week  to look for rhythm, line-breaks, stanzas, and rhyming words.
When we return, we will be looking at how authors use figurative language and sensory language within their poems.

Grammar lessons will focus on a review of the grammar lessons to date.

Writing:
We will learn how to see the world with poets eyes, to explore  the world in different, fresh, and unusual ways.  Students will practice making a list of ideas to show items in new ways.  We will experience rhythm of poetry and plan a rap reading graphic organizer, then take the ideas to write a poem.
When we return we will be using figurative and sensory language in our poems.

Word Work:
Review of the short ar and are word pattern.

Math
We will begin studying 3D shapes this week.  We will explore polyhedrons, pyramids, and discuss what we already know about 3D shapes.  We
Will observe objects to look for how many edges and vertices each have and practice creating and composing 3D objects.

We will be looking at 2D shapes when we return. Students will explore polygons and discuss their attributes. The will include triangles, quadrilaterals, hexagons, octagons, and pentagons.

Problem solving and computational fluency are integrated into daily math lessons.
