Week of 10-16-17

Dear Parents,

It was wonderful to share the student goals at our conferences this week. Thank you so much for attending. We had an amazing week in second grade this week with many exciting activities. Individual pictures were taken this week. You can still order picture online or turn in the envelope until Tuesday, October 17.  Principal's pride notes were sent home in the Friday folders. This afternoon, we had a presentation through Nepris from a conservationist. The presentation tied in with our unit of inquiry and the conservationist discussed how animals depend on their environment to survive.

In the classroom:

science and social studies:
We have been learning about how matter is changed through physical changes and changes from thermal energy. We built structures and changed the matter to make something that would support a cotton ball. We also used thermal energy to melt our glacier. We made a time lapse video of the melting. Next week, we will be looking at animal and plant characteristics and how animals depend on their environment to meet their basic needs.

math:
We have been learning about standardized measurement of inches, feet and yards. We made "feet" to understand the concept of why standardized measurement is important. We did a classroom search of things that were smaller than an inch, about and inch, and larger than an inch. We also used yards to create clothes for a giant.  Next week, we will be looking at centimeters and meters.

reading:
We have been focusing on text features that are found in non-fiction. We did a Nearpod lesson about non-fiction text features and we did text feature surgery to find real life examples in magazines. Next week we will be looking at the difference between a topic and a main idea. We will also be looking for supporting details.

writing:
We have finished out first draft of our story. We wrote our satisfying ending using the acronym M.E.A.L.S. (memory, emotion, advise, lesson learned or summary). We looked for examples in books and then applied what we learned to our own writing. Next week we will be revising, editing, conferencing, and publishing.

word work:
We will be looking at the long a pattern spelled with -ai or ay.

The secret word of the week is: Mulan
Have a wonderful weekend,
