Week of 5-15-17

Dear Parents,

What a wonderful week in second grade. Your children have taken on the design process with great enthusiasm. There a many events coming up this week and next.

May 16 Tuesday: Volunteer appreciation breakfast
May 18 Thursday: Student led conferences in the classroom from 8:00 to 8:45 see letter in Friday folder.
May 19 Friday: Field day. Lunch time changed to 11:56 to 12:26.
May 22 Monday: Principal's pride 8:00 in the cafeteria
May 29 Monday: Holiday
June 1 Thursday: Last day of school party at 12;15 - 2:00.

In the classroom:
Science/social studies:
Students have been learning about the parts of the design process. Students took on a design challenge this week to come up with a solution to any problem about transportation. Students designed a prototype to share and will reflect on what they might do differently or keep the same. Students used Little Bits to make a light come on and then see if they could have it come on in the dark and go off automatically in the light. Next week, we will be sharing our prototypes and learning about how technology has changed recreation.

Math:
We have finished our look at three digit subtraction with some fun math brain teasers. We will begin our look at fractions and then multiplication.

Writing:
We have been working on creating a presentation about the inventor they researched. Students have created books using book creator, Google slides, and comic life. Students will be working on reflecting on their goals from the beginning of the year to share at student led conferences.

Reading:
Students have been learning about the different parts of drama.
Students will be viewing a variety of performances of readers' theaters and reflecting on the differences. They will complete a rubric about each performance.

Word Work:
No spelling list this week due to student led conferences and field day. The following week will be the last list.
