week of 5-8-17

Dear parents,

I am always so amazed at the wonderful support we receive from parents. Thank you so much for all the cards and flowers this week. It was a very nice teacher appreciation week. I hope you had a chance to make to school for the gallery night. The students artwork is always a wonder to see.

Happening in the classroom:

Social Studies/Science:
Students have be discovering what technology is. The sorted items to learn if they were technology or not. Students have been researching inventors to learn about the technology they invented. Students are creating slide shows, comic life apps, book creator app, or other choices to present their learning.
Next week, we will be learning about the design process and how transportation has changed over time. We will have a design challenge around transportation to finish the week.

Math:
District common assessment was given on Monday and Tuesday. The remainder of the week we worked on reviewing skills. We will finish three digit subtraction and begin fractions next week.

Writing:
We are working on publishing our personal narrative. Next week we will be learning about how communication has changed over time.

Reading:
We worked on an author study and  how the author develops characters. Students read several books by Jan Brett and chose a character to write about the character traits. Students used the app. comic life to show their thinking. Next week we will discuss the elements of drama.
