week of 5-1-17

Dear parents,

Another amazing week in second grade. Students worked on and presented their summative projects for our end of the unit about meeting working to meet personal, financial, and societal needs. Our next unit has begun. It is How the World Works. The central idea is: technology has changed the way we live.

Monday and Tuesday will be our math district curriculum assessments. The test will be in the morning so please make sure to have a good night's rest and a good breakfast. I will send home the scores for both the language arts and math hopefully in the Friday folder on May 4.

Pleas remember to turn in the literacy library books on Monday, May 1. This will be our last turn in so you will not receive any more books this year. A huge thank you to our two wonderful literacy library volunteers this year. They have been a tremendous help.

Mark your calendar:

Happening in the classroom:

science and social studies: Students completed their summative projects which needed to include what job the thought they might have when they grew up and how that job would meet their personal, financial, and societal needs. Students created videos with green screen, poster, Google slides, Google, draw, and puppet shows. I was amazing to see the creativity. We are beginning our unit How the World Works. The central idea is: technology has changed the way we live. We are exploring what is technology?

Math: We are reviewing concepts and skills for our curriculum assessment. We will begin fractions and follow that with multiplication and division.

Writing; We finished the district curriculum assessment. We are continuing to work on drafting our stories.

Reading: We finished the district curriculum assessment. We are working on an author study. We had a wonderful Google hangout with the author Mark Cheverton. He was an amazing speaker. He has a website that children can go on and publish their stories. www.markcheverton.com.

Word Work: pattern for next week is -dge and -ge
change, large, sponge, edge, badge, bridge, age, stage, huge, plunge

secret phrase: "failure means you haven't found the right path." A quote from our author.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
