Classroom newsletter
Week of January 23, 2017
Dear parents,
What a wonderful week in second grade. We had a restful holiday on Monday and went right to work on Tuesday. We had a wonderful week learning about choices for further education after high school. Mrs. Hougham came to visit and introduced the students to an interactive web based game to learn about future careers. The students will have access from home to continue to play. Mrs. Hougham is going to share how to do this in the weekly updates from the principal. Science fair begins next week so we will not have library checkout next Friday. Science fair viewing night is Wednesday, January 25 from 6:00 to 7:00 in the library.
Please remember to return literacy library books "baggie books" on Monday. Volunteers will be here Monday to change the books out.
In the classroom:
Science and Social Studies:
We have been working all week on our ending project for our unit of inquiry for How We Express Ourselves. The central idea was: Ideas can be communicated in a variety of ways. Students started with and idea that was important to them and then created something to express that idea. We had students make posters, use Google draw, use Google slides, write math problems and write skits to express themselves. Students were definitely being creative.
We will start our next unit this coming week. It begins with a study of maps.
The Central idea for the unit is : Human and geographic factors affect communities.
Math:
We continue to work on math strategies for addition and subtraction. We introduced bridging to a 10 with a very creative "Whopper" problem. It was interesting to see students learn about how to add the same number several times and how much faster it was to bridge to the nearest 10 to solve the problem. We will continue next week with a "Skittle" problem.
Reading:
This week we finished up with our poetry unit by reading poems and learning to infer and draw conclusions about poetry. We will begin with a unit about folktales. We will focus on story elements, a sequenced retell, and character traits.
Writing;
We have spent time all week learning about how to narrow our topic to write a personal narrative. Students have their plans ready and we will be drafting next week. We will also be discussing how to make a great beginning and a satisfying ending.
Word work: word pattern is (-ir, ire, ier)
High frequency words for next week;
girl, first, fire, hire, flier, pliers, third, swirl, twirl, crier.
secret word: Neverland
Important dates:
Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
