Week of October 24, 2016

Dear Parents,
It has been another wonderful week in second grade. We have been busy building our knowledge this week. The PTA silent auction is coming up the evening of November 4. If you haven't bought your tickets yet you can go to the PTA website for more information.  Report cards will be going home in the Friday folder on November 4. Please don't forget to send in Friday folders and homework folders on Monday. Friday is library day. On Monday, your child will receive 3 books from the literacy library. Please read these nightly and keep them for two weeks. The book bags will be due back on Monday, November 7. A huge thank you to our literacy library volunteers! This is a huge job.
Reminders;
Monday is Principal's Pride at 8:00 in the cafeteria for those receiving the award this nine weeks.
Wednesday is early release at 12:00. We will be eating in the classroom and our lunch time is much earlier it is 10:41 to 11:11.

In the classroom:

Social Studies/Science:
We have been learning about animal survival this week. We have learned about food chains and how important the sun is in the food chain. We have also discussed what makes an animal an animal. This coming week, we will learning about how different animal characteristics help animals survive. We will also be learning about why different animals have different characteristics. We will finish out the week learning about plant characteristics.

Math:
We have been experimenting with the different strategies to add. We have learned how to use a hundreds chart to add. We have also learned about the break-apart strategy along with partial sum. We have also learned how to use a number line to add. This coming week, we will be discovering a variety of subtraction strategies. We will be using these strategies to problem solve.

Reading:
We have been learning about main idea and supporting details using nonfiction. We will continue with this and continue to work on the structure of nonfiction. We will be doing nonfiction surgery this week.

Writing:
We are working on how to research. We have created 5 questions about an animal. We have learned how to use a graphic organizer to help answer one question at a time. Next week, we will continue gathering our information to make our all about book.

Word Work:
Next week we will be studying the long U and short U patterns in class. The high frequency words for the week are: but, cut, jump, just, must, run, put, until, up, upon, us and use. The list will go home in the homework folders on Monday. Your child will also receive individual sort that you can work on for the next two week.
