Class newsletter

Week of September 12, 2016

Dear parents,
What a fun week in second grade this week. Thank you so much for coming to the parent orientation. If you were unable to attend, a letter with all the details I went over is in the Friday folder. If you were unable to sign up for a conference, I will be sending an email on Monday with time that are available.  I enjoyed meeting everyone again and am looking forward to our goal setting conferences on October 10.  I will be sending home a note in next Friday's folder to confirm your conference time. The Friday before the conferences, I will send home a reminder in the Friday folder.

PTA is getting ready for our biggest fund-raiser, the silent auction. Flyers are in your Friday folder with information about it.

I also sent home a math paper that I told students they can finish has homework next week. They do not have to it is optional.

Homework folders will go home on Monday, September 12.  The first turn in day will be Monday, September 19.

What is happening in the classroom:
Social Studies and Science: We are continuing with our "Who We Are" unit of inquiry.  This week students have investigated many different scientists. Students choose one scientist and told the class what they learned about their scientists.  If students want to investigate more scientists, I put a link on my links page under science. We also investigated Benjamin Franklin and all the different roles he had in his life. Students discovered he was a scientist, inventor, writer, thinker, risk-taker, leader, reader, and hero. Next week, students will be learning about what makes a good citizen.

Math:
We have finished with our graphing. We have been looking at two digit place value. Students are responsible for being able to express two digit numbers in standard form ie 26, expanded form 20 + 6 and written form (twenty-six). We will continue to work on this throughout the year. We are also looking at placement of numbers on a number line. We are learning what features are present on a number line. How to tell what a number line is counting by.  We will continue this next week. We will be looking at how to use a number line to solve problems.

Writing:
We have been working on learning about what writers do. We have discussed how writers get their ideas. This week we worked on how do writers organize their writing. We told our stories to a partner and them we created a beginning, middle and end plan. We will continue next week with writing our beginning middle and end.

Reading:
We have been learning about making predictions and inferences. We have been "reading" a wordless book and using picture clues to make predictions and inferences. This next week we will be learning about using word clues to make predictions and inferences.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend and I will see everyone on Monday.
The secret word this week is: Snow White

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
