Week of 9-19-16

Dear Parents,

What a wonderful week in second grade. We are really getting in the grove of learning. This week was the first week for homework.  Please remember to have your child fill out the homework folder and bring it to you for a parent signature. Monday will be our first homework folder turn in day.  In your Friday folder you will find a conference time confirmation slip. Friday was also our first ticket turn in day.  One of the prizes for ticket turn in is to bring a stuffed animal. I have explained to the students that the stuffed animal has to be a small one and must fit on their desk. We will have ticket turn in twice a month.  We are also working on our class point and we are almost there.
Snacks: I have had several students forget their snack this week. I have small packets of pretzels that I am bringing in to have just in case.  Please help your child remember their snack.

What is happening in the classroom:
Social Studies/ Science:
We have been learning about being a good citizen.  We have learned about Amelia Earhart and other examples of good citizens.  Students created posters about a good citizen and what PYP attitudes or learner profile attributes that citizen showed.  They are learning many characteristics of good citizens. This coming week we will celebrate Constitution Day and World Peace Day.  We will also be learning about traditions and celebrations and how our traditions and celebrations help to make us who we are.

Math:
We have been ordering and comparing numbers. We have also been working on recognizing odd and even numbers.  Students have been learning how to place numbers on an open number line.  Next week, we will be learning a variety of addition and subtractions strategies.  Some of these include the break apart strategy, adding and subtraction on a number line, counting on, counting back and partial sum.

Writing:
Students have been working on organizing a story into a beginning, middle, and end using a plan.  We will continue to work on taking a writing piece through all the steps of the writing process.

Reading:
We have been working on strategies good readers use.  We have learned about rereading, getting your mouth ready, skipping the part and coming back, and chunking up words.  We have also been working on good reader strategies such as prediction, questioning, and inferring.  We will continue to work on good reader strategies next week by making connections, and generating questions as we read.

Word Work:
We will begin word work this week.  I will be sending home a word sort for your child to work on at home.  Remember to look in the back of the homework folder for ideas to do for spelling.  We will be incorporating the Round Rock required high frequency words in with our class word sorts.  The class word sorts will not come home.  They are patterns were are working on in class. I will post the high frequency words your student will need to know in my newsletter each week.  This will begin in October.
The secret word of the week is: Goofy

I hope you have a wonderful weekend
Ms. Hansen
