Class Newsletter
Week of August 29, 2016
Dear Parents,
It has been a wonderful first week of school. I have so enjoyed getting to know all of your lovely children. It is going to be a fabulous year. Just some reminders, please send a water bottle and a healthy snack each day with your child. If you have a change in the way your child is getting home during the day, please call the office and they will let me know. Homework will begin after the parent orientation night. Parent orientations is Thursday, September 8 at 5:00. We will have a full day to do parent conferences on October 10. Please keep that day open. There will be a sign up sheet at the parent orientation. Our first early release day will be September 28. Release time is 12:00 instead of 12:45. We will need to eat in the classroom on early release days. Only sack lunch will be available in the cafeteria if you child needs to purchase lunch.
What is happening in the classroom:
Science and Social Studies:
We have started our unit of inquiry "Who We Are". The central idea of the unit is: Our many different roles affect our character. We are learning about how we learn best. We are also learning about being a scientist, mathematician, writer, reader, and citizen. We will be looking at how scientist use safe practices. We will also be exploring a variety of different scientists.
Math:
We are using our research skills to collect, record, organize and interpret data in the form of graphs. We have graphed how the class gets home and our birthdays. Next week, we will continue to work on collecting data and creating graphs.
Reading and Writing:
We have been learning about what our reading workshop will look like and started our independent reading. Next week we will be looking at characters in fiction stories and continuing to read independently. In writing, we will be setting up our writing workshop and starting to generate some ideas to write about.
I always put a secret word in the newsletter. If your child tells me the secret word on Monday, I give them an extra super star ticket. The secret word is: Mickey Mouse
I hope you have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
