Week of May 2, 2016

Dear Parents,
What a wonderful week in second grade. Market Day was a huge success and so much fun. I am always amazed at the creativity from the students. I am excited for you to see all the progress your students have made over the year at our open house on Wednesday. You should have received a letter explaining the conferences on Wednesday in last week's Friday folder.  If not, please email me and I will send you an electronic copy.  Remember Wednesday is an early release day.
Second grade will be administering end of the year district curriculum assessments this week. There are two assessments.  A Language Arts assessment which consists of both a reading and writing component, and a Math assessment. This is just one assessment of your child's progress.

May activities:
As part of our final unit of inquiry, second graders will be participating in a Makerspace Building Day. Each child will need to bring a large bag full of items to build a structure.  Containers, cans, ribbons, materials, boxes, plastic items, buttons etc.  Think of this as a way to clean out the closet!
Each student will also need to bring a roll of masking tape to use to build the structure.

Please send in a large cloth bag to bring supplies home in.  This should be in the classroom with their name labeled on it by Friday, May 13.

In the classroom:
Social Studies/Science:
We finished up our unit of inquiry: How We Organize Ourselves.  The final activity was to create a market day book that summarized each student's experience.  Included in the book is a memory page, the business plan, a reflection, and a summary about being a producer and consumer. This week we will working on preparing for student led conferences,

In Math:
Its all about fractions.  We have been working on naming parts of a whole including 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8. We will be looking at fractional parts that are more than a whole and determining parts of shaded fractions.

In reading:
We have finished our look at media literacy.  We will be looking again at fiction and nonfiction and inference.

In writing:
We will continue to work on writing friendly letters.

In word work:
The list 6 test of high frequency words will be this Friday, May 6. The final small list will be tested on Friday May 20.

Have a wonderful weekend,
