Week of April 25, 2016

Dear Parents,

Another amazing week in second grade. In your Friday folder is a letter explaining our spring conferences and the time of the conference.  This is a student led conference and  your student should be with you at the conference.  Please don't forget that Wednesday is Market Day.  Your student will need to bring his/her items to school Wednesday morning.  Thank you for your help with this project at home.

What's happening in the classroom:
Science and Social Studies:
We are finishing up our unit of inquiry, How We Organize Ourselves. This week we had a guest speaker from A+ Credit Union.  The presenter talked about how to make a budget that included being able to balance spending and saving.  We are also looking at the techniques of advertisement. Students have generated a list of techniques advertisers use.  Student will apply what they learned this week and create an advertisement for their product to be used on Market Day.

Math:
We finished our look at financial literacy and began our study of fractions. Students are learning about how fractions have to be equal parts.  We are also learning about fractions of a whole and fractions of a group.  Students are responsible for understanding the fractions one-half, one-fourth, one eighth and one-third.  We will be learning how to write fractions and what the different parts of a written fraction mean.

Writing:
Students have finished publishing their fairy tales.  We are starting to learn about and write friendly letters.

Reading:
We have been supporting our unit of inquiry by learning about media literacy and making the connection to advertisement.  We will continue to look at media literacy this week.

Word Work:
We are working on the high frequency words list 6.  We are also working on our cursive and capitalization.
