Week of April 11, 2016

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for all the wonderful birthday wishes.  It is always so much fun to celebrate my birthday with such special students. Report cards are in the Friday folders.  Please keep the report card but sign and return the envelope. If you have already pre-ordered wristbands for the carnival they are in the Friday folders. There is still an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets and carnival wristbands through April 13.  You can go to the PTA story at www.spicewoodpta.org or return the half sheet located in the Friday folder. Students will also be bringing home a letter about the upcoming second grade Market Day on April 27. I have explained this to the students. The goal for this week is to think of a creative ideas for their products and work on just the top half of the business plan. We will be working on flow charts and advertisements the following week.

What is happening in the classroom:
Social Studies/Science:
We have been working on the idea of income. How do people get money? How do people spend their money? What is the importance of saving money? Why do people choose the job they do? What do people like about their job?  Are there other reasons to work other than just an income? Students were very excited to share what they learned about their parents jobs. This week we will be learning about producers, consumers, goods, services, supply and demand.  We will follow that with a look at media literacy and advertisements.

Math:
We have been learning about the what it looks like to save money and spend money. Why is it important to save money? What happens to your money when you continue to save? What is borrowing? What is responsible borrowing and what is irresponsible borrowing?

Writing:
We have finished drafting our fairy tales. We will work on revising, editing and publishing them.

Reading:
We are finishing up our look at different types of tales with a look at tall tales.  We will begin a look at fact and opinion which will help with our advertising.

I hope you have a wonderful week,
Secret word: carnival
Ms. Hansen
