Week of 4-18-2016

Dear Parents,

I hope you had a chance to come out Friday evening and enjoy the school carnival. The are so many amazing things our PTA does for our school! Please mark the date for May 4 early release.  This day will be our spring conference afternoon. I will send home a letter with your child's time on Friday, April 22.  Another great event happening in May, is gallery night.  Gallery night will be Thursday, May 19.
Please do not forget that the business plan is due Wednesday, April 20.
I hope students have been working on their ideas for market day.  Items for market day are to be brought to class the morning of Wednesday, April 27.  I can't wait to see all the creative ideas.

What is happening in the classroom:

Science and Social Studies:
We are almost to the end of our How We Organize Ourselves unit of inquiry.  Students have been learning about goods and services, producers and consumers, and supply and demand. This week we will be looking at the qualities and techniques used in advertisement.  We are combining this with our study of media literacy in reading. Students will be applying what they learn to create an advertisement for their market day products in class.

Math;
We have been learning about money and the importance of saving money.  We have learned about what is responsible borrowing and irresponsible borrowing.  We have learned about producing and selling a good. This has been a great connection with our unit of inquiry.  We will start our study of fractions this week.

Writing:
We are continuing to work on our fairy tales.  We will be finishing publishing them this week. We will then look at friendly letter writing.

Reading:
We are working with fact and opinion and then making connections about fact and opinion in media literacy.

Word Work:
Please continue to work on the high frequency word list number 6.  The words have been entered into spelling city.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
