class newsletter 4-1-16

Week of 4-4-16 to 4-8-16

Dear parents,

It has been another wonderful week in second grade.  Report cards will be going home in the Friday folder on April 8.  We have the school spring carnival on April 15. Don't forget to order your wristbands.  We began our How We Organize Ourselves unit this week which ends with our Market Day.  Market Day is scheduled for Wednesday, April 27. We will need some parent volunteers that morning to help with set up.  If you are available in the morning any time between 7:30 and 10:30, could you let me know? Your help would be greatly appreciated.  A letter will be going home explaining what students will need to do at home to prepare for market day next Friday in the Friday folder. Spring conferences will be held on the early release day May 4.  I will be sending home a letter explaining our spring conferences later in April.  Second grade spirit night is on May 17 at MOD pizza. The final principal's pride will be held on Monday, May 23.

What is happening in the classroom?

science/social studies:
We have begun our How We Organize Ourselves unit of inquiry. The central idea is: People work to meet personal, financial, and societal needs. We began the unit with our version of the game of life. Students were given a job and an income. The students had to use the money to pay for their basic needs including food, shelter, transportation, and clothing.  We even through in an unexpected expense like your car broke down pay $1.00.  It is a fun and interesting way to start our unit.  We will be looking into how people provide for their needs and wants, what a producer and consumer are, and the factors that influence our choices as consumers.

math:
We began our look at money. This week we have been getting to know the value and the appearance of the different coins. We have been counting a variety of collections of coins and playing money bingo. This coming week we will be doing activities that have to do with spending, saving, and earning money.

reading:
We have finished our look at myths this week. We will be reading tall tales and learning about the characteristics of tall tales. We will also be practicing looking in the text for text evidence to answer comprehension questions.

writing.
We finished our reflection and unit summative activity for Where We are In Place and Time. We also began writing our fairy tale.  We will continue to work on our fairy tale next week.

word work;
We will have our test on list 5 on Friday, April 8.  Please be studying.  The words are available in spell city.

Secret word of the week: work

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
