Class Newsletter

Week of March 28, 2016

 Dear parents,

I can't believe the third nine weeks is over and we are starting on the last nine weeks of this school year. Time has flown by. Report cards will be going home on April 8.  We have the school spring carnival on April 15. We will begin our How We Organize Ourselves unit this week which ends with our Market Day.  Market Day is scheduled for Wednesday, April 27. We will need some parent volunteers that morning to help with set up.  If you are available in the morning any time between 7:30 and 10:30, could you let me know? Your help would be greatly appreciated.  A letter will be going home explaining what students will need to do at home to prepare for market day. Spring conferences will be held on the early release day May 4.  I will be sending home a letter explaining our spring conferences later in April.  Second grade spirit night is on May 17 at MOD pizza. The final principal's pride will be held on Monday, May 23.

This week in:

Social Studies/Science:
What a fabulous week of discovery and inquiry.  The students have been building their community in Minecraft.  They have been urban planners deciding where streets and building should be. Making decisions about where the landfill should be in relationship to the housing. What type of transportation should the city have?  Where should shopping be in relationship to housing? Students used their communication skills and their cooperation skills to build the community together.  A wonderful way for students to make the connection about how communities are affected by human factors and geographic factors.
This week we will begin our How We Organize Ourselves unit of inquiry.  The central idea is: People work to meet personal, financial, and societal needs.

Math:
We have finished our look at addition and subtraction of three digit numbers with renaming.  We will begin a look at money. Your student should be able to identify the front and back of all coins.  A great game to play at home is to take all the change out of your pocket and have your child count it. We will be making connections with our How We Express Ourselves unit of inquiry through our financial literacy TEKS.

Reading and Writing:
Students continue to read a variety of tales.  We have been looking at myths and will begin learning about tall tales.  In writing, students are writing a fairy tale.  We will take the fairy tale through the complete writing process.

Word work:
We are working on the r controlled spelling patterns.  Students should have brought home a word sort with the ar, air, and are spelling patterns.  Don't forget to be working on the high frequency word list. The list is available in spelling city.

secret word of the week: coins

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
