Week of January 25, 2016

Dear Parents,

It has been another great week with second graders.  Hard to believe that this will be the last week in January already.  Please save the date for our Poet Tea on February 12 at 10:30 - 11:15.  Students will be sharing their creativity through poetry. The Poet Tea invitation will be in the Friday folder on January 29.   We will also have the Valentine's Day party that afternoon. I will send home a class list in the Friday folder on January 29. Class pictures will be on February 2 at 8:10.  Please make sure to be on time. I don't want anyone to miss our class pictures.  They will also be doing the spring individual pictures at that time.

What is happening in the classroom:

Science:
We have been learning about how matter is physically changed.  We are making connections to why certain types of materials are used for certain things.  For example, why we build buildings out of steel and not pipe cleaners.  We have also learned about how we change matter to meet our needs. This coming week we will be learning about light and sound energy.

Math:
We have been focusing on the attributes of three dimensional shapes. We have build three dimensional shapes and learned about vertices, edges, curved surfaces, and straight surfaces. Next, we will learn about area and then on to multiplication.

Reading/Writing:
We continue our study of poetry.  We have been learning about the characteristics of poetry especially word choice.  We will be learning about author's purpose for writing poetry and the connection to the reader.  We will also be using visualization to help with comprehension. Students will continue to write a variety of poetry.

Word work:
We have been working on -le and -ight.  We will work on the third list of the high frequency words and parts of speech (nouns and verbs).

Secret word of the week: creativity

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and upcoming week,
Ms. Hansen
