week of January 11 - 15, 2016

Dear parents,

Welcome back and Happy New Year!  I hope all of you had a restful and happy holiday season. It is hard to believe we are in the second half of second grade already. Thank you for a wonderful first half of the year.  Report cards will come home Friday, January 15.  Monday, January 18 is a school holiday.  Please continue with the homework routine you have in place.  As I introduce new math concepts, I am putting new links on my website to go with the learning.  For example, we are working on two dimensional figures and I have added a link to an online geoboard. The students have earned another class reward and will be allowed to bring electronic on Friday, January 15 and use them the last half hour before recess. If you do not want to send an electronic, a board game would also be great.  I hope you have a wonderful weekend and week ahead.

What we are working on:

Science:
We are working on learning about the physical properties of matter.  We are also learning why scientists use physical properties to classify matter. This week we will be learning about the changes heat can have on matter.  We will also be learning about physical changes to matter such as cutting, mixing, etc.

Math:
We are learning about the attributes of two dimensional figures.  We will also be learning about composing and decomposing shapes.  We have learned what a polygon and quadrilateral are. We will also be following that up with a study of three dimensional shapes.  We will be learning about faces, edges, and vertices of different three dimensional shapes.

Writing and Reading:
We are continuing with our How we Express Ourselves unit of inquiry.  The central idea being: People express themselves through poetry.  Students are reading a variety of different poems to learn about the craft of poetry and the response poetry brings to people.  We are learning about different techniques poets use to express themselves such as sensory language and similes.  Students are writing and expressing themselves in poetry of their own.

Word Work:
We will be learning about the final stable syllable.  (le and tion).  Please start working on the third list from the high frequency word list.  The test will be at the end of January.

The secret word is: electronics (tell Ms. Hansen on Monday for a super star ticket).

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
