Week of February 1, 2016

Dear parents,

I can hardly believe it is already February.  We have a very busy February.  Please don't forget that Tuesday, February 2 is class picture day.  Our class pictures are at 8:10.  In your child's Friday folder, you should have received and invitation to our Poet Tea to celebrate the fabulous poets your students have become.  Students will be sharing with you some of the poems they have created.  You should have also received a letter about our Valentine's Day class party.  Both events will take place on Friday, February 12.  Please don't forget that Wednesday, February 3 is an early release day.  Our lunch time changes that day to begin at 11:11 instead of 11:31.

What is happening in the classroom:

Science/Social studies:
We have been learning about sound and light energy.  We learned through exploration that sound is created by movement and vibration. We also explored trying to see things with no light, some light, and full light. We will begin looking a patterns of movement (spinning, sliding, and rolling) and the force of magnetism.

Math:
We have finished our geometry unit. We have started exploring multiplication as repeated addition and equal groups.  We are learning about groups of a number.  We will continue looking at multiplication and applying math situations to multiplication sentences. For example what math situation would fit 2 groups of 3 and what math situation would fit 3 groups of 2.  We will follow this with a look at the concept of division.

Word Work:
We will be working on contractions and parts of speech adjective and adverb this week.  List 4 of the high frequency words is now on spelling city.  Go to my links and click on spelling city.  Look for list 4.

Reading and Writing:
We continue to work on creatively writing poetry and reading a variety of poems.  Our central idea is: Ideas can be communicated creatively. We look forward to sharing our work at the Poet Tea.

The secret word for the week is: equal groups

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
