Week of December 7, 2015

Dear Parents,

It has been a busy week this week. Science fair is coming up in January.  It is optional in second grade, however, if you would like to participate the information is available on the PTA website. You can also order a science board for the project through the PTA at a much lower cost.  We will do a class project to help students learn about the process for creating a project for the science fair. Principal's Pride will be held on Monday, December 14 at 8:00 in the cafeteria.  Notices went home in the Friday folder if you child will be receiving the award this time.  Report cards for this nine week will be going home January 15.  The student winter break begins on Friday, December 18.  Our holiday party will be held in the afternoon of December 17.

Science:
We have been learning about natural and man-made resources this week. Students have been learning about how we change a natural resource into something that can be used. We have also been discussing how resources are shared and how we change the environment to get natural resources. Next week, we will be learning about the how we change our environment and the  consequences of changing our environment.

Math:
We have been working on time to the five minute. I can tell that students have been practicing at home.  We have learned about using strategies to subtract two digit numbers.  This week and next, we have been looking at three digit place value.  We have been learning about the value of the hundreds place, writing numbers in expanded form, standard form, and placing three digit numbers on a number line.  We will also be learning how to order and compare three digit numbers.

Writing:
We have started our poetry unit.  We have discuss using our poet's eye to look at ordinary objects in different ways.  We will be learning about line breaks, hearing the music in poetry, rhythm, rhyme, and repetition, and using similes and senses in poetry.

Reading:
We will be reading a variety of poetry and learning how to do a reader's response to poetry. We will be paying attention to how poetry is read and thinking about the expression in poetry.

Word Word:
A new word sort will go home in the homework folder on Tuesday.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.  Remember to tell you child the secret word to tell me on Monday for a ticket.  The secret word is: natural resources.
