Week of December 14, 2015

Dear Parents,
It has been another wonderful week in second grade.  We have the winter break starting on Friday, December 18 until January 5, 2016.  Our winter party will be held on Thursday afternoon. A letter about the party is going home in the Friday folder.  Please don't forget Principal's Pride on Monday, December 14 for some of our students.  Our spirit night that was scheduled for December 10 has been rescheduled for May 17 at MOD pizza.  Report cards for the second nine weeks will be sent home on January 15.

In science/social studies:
We have been learning about the consequences to changing the environment.  Students did an experiment trying to clean up a simulated oil spill.  Students learned that no matter what tool they used all the oil could not be cleaned up. It was a messy but meaningful learning experiences. Next week, we will starting our summative project.  Students will be using Powtoons to create a presentation to show action they might take because of a problem in sharing our natural resources.

In math:
We have been learning about three digit place value.  Students have made models of three digit numbers, ordered three digit numbers using a number line, greater than and less than and greatest to least, and learned about standard, expanded and word forms of three digit numbers.

In writing:
Students have been writing poetry.  Students have been learning about how poets use line breaks to make their poetry sound musical. Students have been publishing poetry and saving their poetry in a poetry folder.

In reading:
Students have been reading a wide variety of poetry and have been learning how to respond to poetry.
In spelling:
Students received a new sort on Tuesday.  Students will be tested on the second list of high frequency words on Wednesday.

The secret word of the week is: line break.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
