Week of November 9, 2015

Dear parents,

What an exciting week in second grade. I hope the class enjoyed their electronics as a class reward. Looking forward to our next class reward.  We are going on a field trip, we have a Veteran's Day assembly, a 4th grade music program and Poetry Alive on Friday.  Whew!  Please send library book on Monday.  We are going to the library on Monday since we will be gone on Tuesday.  Please send your students will a disposable water bottle unless they want to carry on all day.  Please send them in weather appropriate clothes with bug spray and sunscreen applied at home.  Please send lunches in disposable container, also.  This is a very fun field trip led by LCRA volunteers.

In science/social studies:
We have been working on animal physical features and how those features help the animal to survive. We have also started to learn about the different parts of a plant.  We are learning about how different leaves have different functions to help a plant survive.  We will also be looking at a plant from the roots up and making a scientific drawing of a plant and its parts.  We will then start looking at how environmental changes affect plants and animals including migration, hibernation, and dormancy.

In math:
We have finished looking at linear measurement.  We have started our look at time and will continue this week.  We are working on telling time to the five minutes.  Students are learning how to say and write time, such as it is 5 twenty or twenty minutes past 5.  It is quarter after, quarter til,  and half past.

In reading and writing:
We have been working on research skills including taking notes and reading non-fiction text to locate facts.  We have been recording notes and now are taking the notes and creating a report.  Student will be publishing their report in google docs.  The secret word is: Field trip

In word work:
Student took the first test on the high frequency words.  The results are in their Friday folders.  A new word sort went home on Tuesday.  Please work on the word sort this week also.  We will begin working on the high frequency word list column two on November 16.  We will work on that list that week and take the test before the winter break. I will put the new list in spell city before November 16.

Somewhere hidden in my newsletter is a secret word. Have your child tell me on Monday for an extra ticket.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
