Week of November 30, 2015

Dear Parents,

I want to wish you an your families a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.  I hope you have a restful and joyous holiday.  When we come back, we will have just three week before the winter holiday break. Wednesday, December 2, 2015 will be an early release day.  Second grade spirit night will be on Thursday, December 10.  I am not sure of the location.  The Spicewood calendar says Moonie's Burgers, but I think that has changed.  I will email when I verify.  Monday, December 14 will be our second Principal's Pride.  Thursday, December 17 will be our winter holiday party and the students last day before the winter holiday. Students will return on January 5.

When we return from the Thanksgiving holiday, the students will be voting on a class representative for the student council. The role of class representative is different in K-2.  Second grade representatives DO NOT attend the student council meetings. The student council might have one or two meetings that second grade representatives are asked to attend. If your child is chosen, you will be notified by email if your child needs to attend.  The second grade representative has a third grade buddy who meets with them.  The third grade representative passes along any information that needs to be told to the class and also takes any concerns to the student council.  I have explained this all to the students so that they have the opportunity to think about if they would like to represent the class.

In science and social studies:
We have been working on the environmental changes that cause animals to migrate, hibernate or plants to go dormant.  We will be looking at natural resources and tying that into meeting the basic needs of plants, animals, and humans.  We will take a look at how those resources are shared and what happens when there is not enough resources for everyone.  We will also be tying this back into the endangered animal reports students wrote. We will follow this up with a look at how humans change the environment in order to use or gather natural resources.

In math:
We will continue to work on time throughout the year.  Please practice time with your student.  It would help students if you related the time to an event.  For example, we have to leave at 4:00 PM to go to the store.  We would be asleep at 4:00 AM.  We will begin looking at three digit place value. Student will need to be able to order and compare three digit numbers.  Place value is a very abstract concept for students.  For that reason, we studied two digit place value at the beginning of the year and now we are building on that knowledge to extend to three digit place value.  Later in the year we will build to four digit place value.

In reading and writing:
We will be finishing up our Tom the Turkey writing project.  We will then begin our How We Express Ourselves unit of inquiry.  The central idea is: Ideas can be communicated creatively.  We will be inquiring into the author's purpose for writing, the different characteristics of expression, the connection between the author and the reader, and how authors develop creativity.  Student will be learning about different forms of poetry and how poets express themselves.

In word work:
I have put the second high frequency word list into spelling city for the students to work on.  The second list will be tested the last week before the winter holiday.

The secret word is: gobble

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.
Ms. Hansen
