Week of November 16, 2015

Dear Parents,

Please don't forget that Tom the Turkey is due on Monday.  It was a wonderful week in second grade. The field trip was great fun and went perfectly with out study of plants and animals.  The weather was perfect, too.  We enjoyed a Veteran's Day celebration on Wednesday.  The fourth grade put on a fabulous music program on Thursday.  We ended the week with a performance by Poetry Alive where the students found out the secret about teachers (we are aliens).  Ask your student about the alien poem they heard.  I hope to see everyone at the silent auction.

November 23-27 there is no school to celebrate giving thanks.

Science/Social Studies:
We have been learning about the parts of a plant and the function of each part.  The students even did a scientific drawing of a plant.  Next week we will be learning about the how the environment affect animals and plants.  We will discuss how environmental changes cause animals to migrate, hibernate or go dormant.

Math:
We are still working on time.  Students are working on learning vocabulary such as half past, quarter after, and quarter til.  Students should be practicing telling time to the 5 minutes and then begin to work on time to the minute.  We have also learned about AM and PM.  It would help students if they can relate time to certain events.  For example, what time the go to bed 8:30 PM.  What time they wake up 6:30 AM.  We go to soccer practice at 9:00 AM. We will continue to work on time throughout the year.  Next, we will begin working on subtraction and discussing a variety of strategies to help solve subtraction problems.  Including counting on, counting back, breaking apart numbers, and number lines.

In reading and writing:
We have been working on research skills.  Students have completed their endangered animal reports.  Yippie!  They are hanging on our wonderful sharing the planet bulletin board in our hallway.  Next week, we will be writing our Tom the Turkey stories.

Word Work:
We will be working as a whole class on the spelling patterns for long e and long o.

The secret word of the week is: hibernate

Have a wonderful weekend.
