Week of May 4 - 8, 2015

Dear Parents,

We had another exciting week in second grade.  We began with our field trip to McKinney Rough. Students got to see and touch a turtle, a snake, and a baby alligator.  Students also went on a nature walk and learned about different habitats. Next week, we have our student lead conferences and early release on Wednesday.  You should have received a note with your time in last week's Friday folder. Please email me if you have forgotten your time.  It is a 45 minute window please come and go as you need to during that time.  Students will be showing you work from their portfolios and their various subject notebooks.

In Social Studies/Science:
In case you have not heard, we have caterpillars in the room going through their life cycle.  Students have been making observations about the caterpillars.  We even looked at them with a digital microscope.  The student saw the caterpillars go into their J-shape and then go into the pupa stage. We are anxiously awaiting our butterflies to emerge.  We will be preparing a reflection for the student lead conferences this week.  Students will then be observing the moon and its phases.

In Math:
Students reviewed their math curriculum base assessment. Students will be writing a reflection about the assessment and the reflection will be going home soon in their Friday folders.  We are also looking at larger numbers and place value to 1,200.  Number sense is very important.  It is sometimes lost will larger numbers, so we will be working on this skill.

In Writing:
We worked on finishing up our Pow-Toons.  I am hoping that you will be able to see all the wonderful things we have been doing with technology this year.  We will be working on revising and editing skills.

In Reading:
Students continue to work on comprehension skills through reading a variety of folktales from many different cultures.

In Word Work:
Students took a test on the last list of the high frequency words lists.  I will be sending home the tests next Friday.  We will continue with the new word sort that was sent home last Monday.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
