Week of 5-18-15

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for attending the open house.  I am glad everyone had a chance to see all the work students completed this year.  I am sorry that the field day was cancelled today, but it has been rescheduled for Thursday, May 28.  A reminder will be sent home that week.

Our last Principal's Pride will be Tuesday, May 26 at 8:00 in the cafeteria.  A letter went home in the Friday folder for those students receiving Principal's Pride.

Please remember to save recyclable material for our creative invention event for our How the World Works unit of inquiry.

We were fortunate to have a guest speaker Friday, May 15. The speaker talked to the students about solar power and technology.  Students were able to see a solar panel.  We tried to power a motor with the solar panel.  However, there was not much sun.  A good lesson in the advantages and disadvantages of technology.

Students recently took a curriculum based assessment in math.  Students wrote a reflection about what they did well and what they still need to work on.  This reflection is in the Friday folders.

All library books are due next week.  Please look for any books at home and send them in.

Please be on the lookout for a sturdy bag to send on Monday, June 1 for students bring home school items.

We will have an autograph signing day on the last day of school.

Monday, May 25 is a school holiday for Memorial Day.

In the classroom this week:

Science/Social Studies:
We have begun our last unit of inquiry "How the World Works".  The central idea is Technology has changed the way we live.
We will inquire into:  What is technology?
The technological advances that have impacted recreation, communication,                                           and transportation.
                                    Advantages and disadvantages of technology.

Math:
We will begin working on fractions.  Students are expected to understand that fractions are equal parts.  Students will be learning about halves, fourths, and eighths.

Language Arts:
Students will be doing an individual research project and writing a book report.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
