Week of April 27, 2015

Dear Parents,

We have had a exciting week in second grade.  Market Day was a great success.  Students learned a great deal about being a producer and a consumer.  Some of the comments were: "It is hard work being a producer."  "I noticed that some producers lowered their price when they did not sell a lot of their goods."  "I realized that my goods only appealed to boys." It is a wonderful experience, and it was great to see all the unique goods the students brought to sell.  Thank you for your support of this project at home.

This week we will go on our field trip on Monday.  A reminder slip is in the Friday folder.  I also noticed that school supply order form for next year is in the Friday folder.

Thank you for coming out to support the second grade spirit night.

You should have received a notice for your time to attend our spring open house in your Friday folder last week.  It will be held on May 6 which is an early release day.

Social Studies/Science:
This week we are finishing up our How We Organize Ourselves unit of inquiry.  The students seemed to really enjoy the market day.  Students learned about advertising this week and created a poster to advertise their good for the market day.  Ms. Vechan's third grade class came on Thursday to help the students create a Pow Toons advertisement for their product.  It was amazing to watch the older students work so well with the younger students. They were wonderful and patient teachers.

Math:
Last week, students took a curriculum based assessment in math.  This assessment data will help the second grade teacher review and reteach any areas students have not masted.  We continued with our personal finance lessons this week and learned about deposits and withdrawals.  We also learned about wise and responsible borrowing.  Students will move on to three digit place value, fractions, and a review of math concepts to finish out the school year.

Writing:
Students finished publishing their story.  There are some amazing story starters and some very satisfying endings.  Students also reviewed the parts of speech and the parts of a sentence.

Reading:
We have been working on comprehension skills using folktales.  We will continue to work on these skills including theme and main idea with a variety of stories from many countries.  I will begin the end of year reading assessments this year.  Later in May, students will be taking a reading curriculum based assessment.  Again, this data will be used to determine areas that need review and reteach for the end of the year.

Word Work:
I will be giving the test on list #5 of the high frequency words on Friday, May 1.  Please review these at home this week.  Thank you.

Have a wonderful weekend.
Ms. Hansen
