Week of April 13, 2015

Dear Parents,

Thank you for a wonderful birthday week.  I appreciate all the cards and the cookies from Tiff's Treats.  The cards from the students made my day extra special.  I introduced the ending project for our unit of inquiry Thursday.  Students brought home the letter Thursday.  The business plan is due on April 17 and the Market Day items are to be brought to school on Friday, April 24.  The students are very excited about this project.  It is always so much fun for them.  I sent out a general letter about the spring conference.  Second grade teachers will be sending out a more detailed letter and schedule later this month.
Other important second grade dates are:
April 24  second grade market day
April 23  second grade spirit night
April 27 second grade field trip to McKinney Rough

May 6 early release and spring conferences

In Science/Social Studies/ Math:
We are working on our unit of inquiry How We Organize Ourselves.  We are also tying in the math TEKS about personal finance.  We have learned about spending money and saving money.  We have learned about different types of workers.  Students have learned about deposits and withdrawals. Students especially liked sharing about where their parents worked.  Students learned about the reason people work. We discussed why and how people choose the work they do.  Students learned that work helps pay for our wants and needs, but work also is enjoyable for people in many different ways. Students are looking forward to Market Day.  Next week, we will be learning about producers and consumers and what factors influence what we buy.

 In Writing:
Students have been working on a story.  We have worked hard to create satisfying endings to our stories.  We created a revision and editing checklist and students edited and revised their work. Students have been conferencing and are now publishing their stories on the computer.  Next week, we will review parts of speech and students will finish publishing their stories.

In Reading:
We have been reading different fables and learning about the theme, main idea, and moral of these types of stories.  We will continue with this study next week.  We will also read some myths and make the connect about themes that run through these types of stories.

I hope you have a very pleasant weekend.
Ms. Hansen
