Newsletter week of April 6, 2015

Dear Parents,
It was another amazing week in second grade. We continue to grow and learn more each week. Please don't forget about the school carnival coming up on April 10. Tickets have already gone on sale.  Report cards went home in the Friday folders today.  Please keep the report copy and just sign and send the envelope back. You will also find a half sheet of green paper in the Friday folder. This paper is to let the office know if your child is going to return to Spicewood next year or not. Please fill this out and return on Monday.
Other important second grade dates are:
April 24  second grade market day
April 23  second grade spirit night
April 27 second grade field trip to McKinney Rough

In Science/Social Studies:
We have started our new unit of inquiry "How We Organize Ourselves".
The central idea is: People work to meet personal, financial and societal needs. Students will be inquiring into the factors that influence our choices as consumers; consumers and producers; and how work provides for our needs and wants. Students started the unit by playing our version of the game of life. Students were given a job with a salary and had to use the salary to meet their wants and needs. An unexpected expense was also thrown in at the end. We will be learning about different types of jobs and learning about how people earn, spend and save money.

In Math:
We are connecting to our "How We Organize Ourselves" unit by learning about the personal finance TEKS in math. Students will be learning about how people spend money. They will be learning about how saving money can accumulate into larger amounts over time, distinguishing between deposit and withdrawal, identify examples of borrowing and lending, and differentiate between producers and consumers.

In Writing:
We finished the middle of our stories this week. Next week students will see models of satisfying endings and create an ending to their stories. We will be revising, editing, conferencing, and publishing our stories.

In Reading:
We will be learning about Folktales, fables, legends, and myths. The emphasis will be on the themes that go across these different types of stories. We will also be learning the purpose of these types of stories.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.  I will see everyone back on Monday.
Ms. Hansen
