Week of March 30, 2015

Dear Parents,

It was another amazing week in second grade, and the month of April is going to be very busy.  We have the school carnival coming up on April 10.  Order forms for pre-sale tickets went home in the Friday folder today. Our second grade market day will be coming up on April 24. The second grade teachers will be sending home a letter on April 10 with all the details. We will also have a field trip to McKinney Rough on April 27.  Permission slips for the field trip will go home on April 17. Second grade will also be hosting the spirit night on April 23 at Bush's Chicken on 620.  Report cards will go home next Thursday, April 2.  Don't forget that April 3 is a school holiday.  It is going to be a great month.
Our library day will change to Wednesday this week, due to STAAR testing on Tuesday.

Social Studies/Science:
We have been working on our summative project for our unit of inquiry "Where We Are In Place and Time". The students discussed what is needed for a community and created a layout for their community. Student then used Minecraft.edu to create the community. It was an amazing experience. The students were very engaged and had fun too. We will continue to work on our community throughout the rest of the year. Our next unit of inquiry will be "How We Organize Ourselves." The central idea is: People work to meet personal, financial and societal needs. Students will be inquiring into the factors that influence our choices as consumers; consumers and producers; and how work provides for our needs and wants.

Math:
We will be continuing our study of money. Students are expected to be able to count a collection of coins up to $1.00. Students are also expected to be able to use the dollar sign, decimal, and cent sign correctly. This week we have been working on recognition of coins, their value, and combinations of coins. We will continue with these this next week. After we finish with money, we will be learning about personal finance.

Writing:
Students have been working on great beginnings for their stories. We have learned about different types of leads for stories, and students practiced writing two different beginnings for their story. Students also learned about "Show Don't Tell".  Student decided on one lead they liked and revised that lead to include a "Show Don't Tell".  Next week, we will be working on the middle of our story and learning about developing with details.

Reading:
We will be learning about the author's craft of persuasive writing. Students will be looking at different author's to determine how they persuade.

Word Work:
We have been working on contractions this week. Next week, students will have a new sort.  We will be working on the last list of high frequency words the week of April 6.  I will give the list 5 test on May 1.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
