Week of 2-23-15

Dear Parents,

This week was an awesome week.  We have used technology all week to do research, create timelines, learn about government and famous citizens. We ended the week with our STEM enrichment day. We learned about architecture, engineering, rocks and minerals, gears, and even got to speak with a dietitian. A huge thank you to the PTA for making enrichment day such a wonderful success. A special thank you to Sibi's mother for arranging for the whole school to speak with professionals in all fields throughout the day.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone back after spring break.  Have a restful week.

Science/Social Studies:
We worked on researching national and state symbols. We also researched and compared different government jobs. For example comparing the job of a governor to the job of the president. Students also created personal timelines on the computer.  Some students even researched famous citizens and created timelines for them. Students also worked in pairs to learn about services that the government provides for a community. When we return, we will be using all we have learned about communities to create our own community using Minecraft.  I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Math:
We have been working on concrete models of multiplication and division. Students learned about the connection between multiplication and division.  Students also learned how division is related to subtraction and multiplication is related to addition.  They made great connections. After spring break, we will be learning about the value of coins and counting collections of coins. Students will also learn how to use the cent and dollar signs when writing the value of coins.

Writing:
We have started a story of choice and will continue to work on the story when we return.  We will take the story through the writing process.

Reading:
We have been learning about research and how to use text features to help with research. Students have been reading and then using the knowledge they gained to do a variety of projects including timelines, class presentations, and symbols books. When we return we will continue working on our comprehension skills including comparing and contrasting.

I hope everyone has a wonderful spring break.  I can't wait to see everyone back after the break.

Ms. Hansen
