Week of March 2, 2015

Dear Parents,
It was a cold but wonderful week in second grade.  I am looking forward to starting the week with our celebration of Read Across America.  This day is in remembrance of Dr. Seuss.  We will include some science, math, and writing activities within the day. It is a pajama day.  Please remember to come in street shoes, but students may also bring slippers to wear in the classroom.  Students may also bring a stuff animal OR a pillow.  Your student may also bring books to read especially Dr. Seuss books.  Please make sure your child's name is in the books.

Principal's Pride will be on Tuesday, March 9 at 8:00.  I will send home the invitations on Monday.

Science/Social Studies:
We are continuing with our unit of inquiry "Where We Are in Place and Time".  This week students created a map of a familiar place including a title, map key with five symbols, a compass rose, and a route from one place to another.  We also researched and created a Google presentation about different landforms.  Students will be presenting them this week.  We will also be looking at climate.

Math:
We have started our look at multiplication.  We are starting with a conceptual understanding of multiplication.  We have started discussing multiplication by look at groups of, rows of, or columns of.  For example.  Mary made some cookies.  On the tray she made three rows with 4 cookies in each row.  We have also discussed that multiplication is repeated addition.  We will continue next week by working with concrete models of multiplication including array models.

Writing:
We will be working on writer's craft lessons. We will look at how authors begin their stories.  We will also be looking at how authors add details to stories and create satisfying ending.

Reading:
We will be looking at non-fiction and comprehension strategies.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
Ms. Hansen
