Week of 2-16-15

Dear Parents,
Thank you so much for attending the "Poet Tea".  I hope you enjoyed hearing the wonderful poetry created by your children.  Thank you to the parents for helping with the Valentine's Day party.  It means so much to the students.  Please remember that Monday, February 16, is a a student holiday.  I will see everyone on Tuesday.

IB tidbit:
Second grade has started a new unit of inquiry: Where We Are In Place and Time.  The central idea is: Human and geographic factors affect communities.  Students will be learning about the relationship between geographic features and communities. Students will be learning about what a community is. We will also learn about climate patterns and their relationship to settlement.  We will also learn about how humans impact the environment.  We end the unit by creating a community and making a map of our community.

Social Studies and Science:
We have started our new unit of inquiry with the study of maps and geographic features.  Students have been exploring different types of maps.  They have been learning about map legends and map symbols.  We will also be looking into different landforms.

Math:
Students have been learning about the attributes of polygons.  We have learned what is a polygon and what is not a polygon.  We have been learning about the different shapes and how many sides and vertices each shape has.  We will continue with our study of two-dimensional shapes next week.

Word Work:
Students will be coming home with a new sort on Tuesday.  Students were recently retest and the new sorts are based on their progress.

Reading:
We have been working with non-fiction this week.  We have been looking at text features to help us understand how the topic and main idea are related.  We will continue to work on strategies to deepen our comprehension of non-fiction.

Writing:
Students have been learning about writing friendly letters.  We will work to publish a friendly letter. We will also be learning about prepositions.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
