Week of February 23, 2015

Dear Parents,

It was a quick but fun week in second grade.  A form for joining the PTA went home in the Friday folders.  Please consider joining if you have not already.  If you have, thank you.  Student individual picture order forms also went home in the Friday folder.  They are due by March 3.  A district wide parent survey was recently sent out.  I have included the link below for your convenience.  Please take a few moments and complete the survey.

IB Tidibit:
All day long we talk about what skills students are using.  We discuss communication skills, research skills, thinking skills, social skills, and self-management skills.  IB calls these skills the transdisciplinary skills.  Students will use these skills throughout their life.

Social Studies and Science:
We have been busy this week looking at many different types of maps.  We have looked at political maps, physical maps, and product maps.  We have discuss the different parts of a map including: the title, key or legend, symbols, and compass rose.  We have located different countries and land features on the map.  We have also discuss why people settle in locations on the map.  Next week, we will be looking at weather and how that helps determine where people settle.

Math:
We have been busy looking at two dimensional shapes and their attributes including number of sides and number of vertices.  We have also started to look at how we measure area.  We will continue with out look at area next week and then transition into a look at the concept of multiplication.  We will be learning about what multiplication means and how it is related to repeated addition.  We will only be looking at concrete models of multiplication next week.  We will be looking at models to understand how 3 groups of 5 and 5 groups of 3 are different.

Writing:
We will be writing from different prompts to determine our growth in writing and areas that need to be developed further.

Reading:
We will continue our look at non-fiction and how to use text evidence to determine the main idea of a selection.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.  See you on Monday.

Ms. Hansen
