Week of January 19, 2015

Dear Parents,

Another wonderful week in second grade.  We have been very busy using our technology skills to create a Google presentation for the upcoming science fair.  We have also created a Google document to publish one of the poems students have been working on.  Students even inserted a picture on the document.  Did you know you can access your child's Google drive from home? Just bring up Google drive and the students can sign in using their username and password.

IB tidbit:
We hare having our five year evaluation visit this coming week.  We will have visitors on campus on Thursday and Friday.  We have been working on our How We Express Ourselves unit of inquiry. The students are creating very creative poems.

In Science/Social Studies:
This week we created a Google presentation for our "How does heating and cooling effect matter?" science fair project.  We also took the experiment through all the steps for a scientific investigation. Next week we will be learning about physical changes to matter and begin looking at sound and light energy.

In Math:
This week we have been learning about standard measurement using inches, feet, yards.  We also investigated centimeters in metric measurement.  Next week we will be learning about addition and subtraction strategies for two and three digit addition and subtraction.

In Reading/Writing:
We are continuing our study of poetry.  We have learned about some of the characteristics of poetry including: rhyme, rhythm, onomatopoeia, humor, expressing feelings, repetition, and similes.  We will continue to work on characteristics of poetry and how the poet connects to the reader.

Change of Date:
We will be ending our unit of inquiry with a Poet Tea on Friday, February 6 from 10:30 to 11:15. Parents are welcome to come and listen to their students read and share their poetry.

Spicewood teachers and students worked together to create a video about the IB PYP program.  Your students are featured on the video doing one of our inquiry lessons in science.  Below is the YouTube link (I hope).

Have a wonderful weekend,
