Week of January 12, 2015

Dear Parents,

Welcome back.  I hope everyone enjoyed their winter break.  A huge thank you to the parents that volunteered to help out at our winter party.  It was a great way to celebrate the end of the first semester.  I am looking forward to great learning this semester.  Report cards will be in the Friday folder on January 16.  Please continue with your homework support at home.

IB tidbit:
Did you know that your students have started a new unit of inquiry called "How We Express Ourselves"?  The central idea is: People express themselves through poetry.  We will be inquiring into the characteristics of poetry, the poet's purpose for writing a poem, and the connection between the poet, poem and the reader.  I can't wait to see the creative poetry that the students will come up with.

Science/ Social Studies:
Our class took some time this week to reflect on our classroom essential agreements.  The students reviewed what we created as agreements at the beginning of the year.  We had a discussion about the agreements.  We then rewrote our agreements to reflect the changes the class decided on.  Students also reflected on the goals they set for themselves at the beginning of the year.  The students rated themselves and then discussed with a partner their challenges and accomplishments.  Students then took these ideas and created new goals to take them through this semester.
We are continue to study changes to matter through heating and cooling.  We have begun the process of designing and implementing an experiment.  The goal is to take our question all the way through the process and create a science fair class project.

Math:
We are studying linear measurement.  We have been looking at what an inch is using broken rulers. We will continue to work on inches, feet and yards.  We will conclude our study with a look at centimeters and meters.

Reading/Writing:
We have been totally immersing ourselves in poetry.  Students have been reading poetry from a variety of books.  We have looked at objects with our "Poet's eye", and we have even started writing some poems.  We are collecting all our poetry in a poetry folder to share.  We will continue next week with our study of poetry by inquiring into the characteristics of poetry.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Stay warm and I will see everyone on Monday/
Respectfully,
Ms. Hansen
