Week of February 2, 2015

Dear Parents:

What a wonderful week with your students.  We had some great learning experiences this week. We explored sound and magnets this week.  We used computers to publish many poems in anticipation of our "Poet Tea" on Friday. We also had a wonderful visit from an author.  Don't forget that Tuesday is picture day. A note about the Valentine's Day party is in the Friday folder along with a list of students.

IB tidbit:
Each week our class starts the week by reflecting on one PYP attitude or one learner profile attribute.  This last week students reflected about how they were going to be principled this week.  Next week, students will be thinking about how they are going to be open-minded.

In Science/Social Studies:
We explored sound and light energy this week. Student explored different object that make sound and discovered that vibration makes sound. We also learned the difference between the sound waves made by high pitched sounds and sound waves made by low pitched sounds. We also started exploring magnetism.  Students discovered today that not all metals are attracted to magnets. We will continue with our study of magnetism next week and then look at motion.

In math:
We have been learning all about different ways to use a number line to help us add and subtract higher numbers. Students are learning to decompose numbers to help them add and subtract.  We also looked at using addition to help us subtract.  Students also used doubles and combinations of ten to solve larger number problems.

Next week we will be looking at estimating. This will be the foundation for rounding that students will learn in third grade.  Students will be looking at numbers and finding out what ten or hundred the number is closest too. This will be also used as an addition and subtraction strategy.

In Reading and Writing:
Students created and published many poems this week. Students even got a chance to videotape themselves reading one of their favorite poems. Students wrote a group poem, a "one-liner" poem, and a perfect place poem. Next week, we will finish up our How We Express Ourselves unit with our poet tea. Students will get a chance to share all they have created with you.

Second grade spirit night has been changed to April 23.  It will be at the Bush's Chicken on 620.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.  I look forward to seeing you at the poet tea on Friday, February 6 from 10:30 to 11:15.

Ms. Hansen
