Week of November 17, 2014

Dear Parent,

Another wonderful week in second grade full of great learning.  I am looking forward to watching our second grade students perform in the music program on Thursday.  In the past, students have been asked to be at school ready for the program at 6:15.  Students are to meet Mr. Steinburg's room. If this plan changes, I will email parents.  I hope to see you Thursday evening for the program.

This week in:
Science and social studies:  We are continuing with our unit of inquiry "Sharing the Planet".  We are learning about plant and animals characteristics that help them survive and use natural resources.  We will be looking at how changes in the environment cause animals/plants to migrate, hibernate, or go dormant.  We will begin our summative project when we come back from the Thanksgiving holiday.

Math:  Students will continue to learn about 3D shapes.  We will be drawing 3D shapes using real-life objects.  We are also continuing with problem solving.  Students have been learning about how to solve two step problems and missing addend problems.  We will also have a review of place value this week.

Reading:  We will be starting our unit of inquiry "How We Express Ourselves" in a couple of weeks. The unit is about how people express themselves through poetry.  We will be starting to read poetry as an introduction.

Writing:  We are finishing publishing our small moments personal narrative and also working to publish our Tom the Turkey story.  Students are excited to be authors.

Words their Way: We are continuing with our sort that went home last Monday.

Please remember to return Friday folders on Monday.  Tuesday is library day and homework folders are due.

Cold weather is upon us.  Please dress for the weather as we will be having outdoor recess unless the temperature is below freezing.

Have a wonderful week,
Ms. Hansen
