Dear Parents,

Week of November 10, 2014

Another wonderful week in second grade.  Report cards will be in the Friday folder, November 7. Two copies are enclosed for you.  Please keep both copies and sign and return only the report card envelope.  If you are interested in nominating your child for the TAG program, please attend the meeting on Thursday, November 13 at 6:00 in the library.  Thank you for your support on the projects second grade recently sent home.  Remember that Tom the Turkey is due on Monday, November 10.

In Science/Social Studies:
We had a great time learning about how humans change their environment.  We learned about oil spills and even conducted an experiment about what materials would best clean up an oil spill.  Next week, we will be learning about the characteristics of animals that help them survive and how they use natural resources to survive.

In Math:
We are finished with our study of time.  Students need to continue to practice reading analog time to the minute.  We will be learning about 3 D shapes next week including the vocabulary of polyhedron, vertices, faces, and edges.

In Reading:
We will continue to work on our media literacy.  It is everywhere.

In Writing:
We are finishing out personal narratives and will begin working on our fictional piece about Tom the Turkey.

In Words Their Way:
I have given each student a spelling test on the first list of high frequency words.  I have kept records and have sent home the actual test in the Friday folder.  Your child should have come home on Wednesday with an index card with the high frequency words they missed.  The students are to practice these words along with the new sort that will be coming home on Monday.  Toward the end of the semester, I will test the students on the words they missed and on the second part of the high frequency word list.

Have a wonderful weekend.  I hope to see you at the silent auction.

Ms. Hansen
