Week of October 27, 2014

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe, but our first nine weeks of second grade is complete.  It has been a wonderful start to the year.  I am looking forward to more learning each and every day. Report cards will be going home in the Friday folder on Friday, November 7.  This past week we finished up our study of place value, number lines, and addition and subtraction strategies.  We will be revisiting these concepts again later in the year.  We also learned about being safe users of the internet this week with great videos during announcements.  Next week will be red ribbon week and Principal's Pride on Monday. Please make sure to check the PTA website and the e-folder every week for important events.  I have a link on my links page for each of these.
*** Very important the time for the second grade concert has changed to 6:30 rather than 7:00

In Social Studies and Science:
We continue to work on our unit of inquiry "Sharing the Planet".  The central idea is "Living things share natural resources".  We have been learning about where natural resources come from, how getting those natural resources can cause changes to the Earth, and what happens to our environment because of these changes.  We are also learning how natural resources become man-made resources.

In Math,
We have finished our study of place value, number lines,  and addition and subtraction strategies. We will return to this concept later in the year.  We are beginning our study of time and then we will be on to 3-D shapes.  The goal for students will be to read time to the minute by the end of the year.

In Reading:
We have been looking at the structure of fiction and non-fiction.  We have discuss the text features within non-fiction.  We continue to look at the characteristics of each type of text this week.

In writing,
Students are working on a small moments piece of writing.  We will be taking this piece through the revising and editing stages and then on to publishing.  Students have learned about creating interesting leads and satisfying ends.  They will be working with peers and conferencing to complete their writing piece.
