Week of October 20, 2014

Dear Parents,

Your students were thinking like scientists this week.  It is so exciting to see their writing in science.  We had another great week in second grade.  If your student is to receive Principal's Pride on October 27, you will receive notice in this week's Friday folder.  The students did the nomination and took great care in writing why they nominated someone.  Please remember to get your information in the student directory before the cut off date.  A link has been sent out several times.  Please remember to check the Woody Alert and the Friday e-folder.  You can find a link to both on my links page.

In science and social studies:
We are learning about our central idea "Living things share natural resource".  We have been studying the basic needs of plants and animals and how they get their basic needs met through natural resources.  We will be inquiring into the availability of natural resources next.

In math:
We will finish our study of place value and number lines this week and begin our study of telling time on a digital and analog clock.  We will be using vocabulary like half-past, quarter-after, quarter-til, and o'clock.

In writing:
We have learned about using a web to organize our ideas.  We are working on writing a personal narrative with a beginning, middle, and end.  We will be revising our work and looking for better leads and satisfying endings.

In reading:
We are working on synonyms and antonyms.  We are also continuing our author study and thinking about what we are reading using visualization.  We will also be learning about compare and contrast and schema to help with our comprehension.

All our table groups have earned 100 points.  That means.... its reward time.  Students will have game time in the for about a half hour before recess next Friday.  Students are allowed to bring a board game or game of their choice to play during that time.  Please email me if you have a question.

The second grade music program will be on Tuesday, November 18.  There will be two shows one at 1:30 and one at 7:00 in the cafeteria.  You are welcome to attend either or both.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
