Week of October 13, 2014

Dear Parent,

Another great week in second grade.  We finished the OLSAT this week and should have result to send home sometime in November.  In the Friday folder, I put two math games we played last week in class.  This is another resource you can use for homework as math practice.  The first Principal's Pride will be held on Monday, October 27 at 8:00 in the cafeteria.  If you are new to Spicewood, Principal's Pride is a way to recognize students throughout the year.  Students are recognized for showing one of the PYP learner profile attributes.  We recognize all students throughout the year.  I will send home a letter about a week in advance when your child is nominated.  The first letters will be in the Friday folders on October 17.

In social studies and science:
We finished our unit of inquiry "Who We Are".  Students finished their summative project and reflection about the unit last week.  This week we will begin our study of "Sharing the Planet".  Our first line of inquiry will be: An inquiry into living things dependence on the environment.  We will be learning about the basic needs of plants and animals and natural resources.

In math:
Students will finish their study of place value, number line, and odd and even numbers.  We will begin working on time as our next unit.  We will continue with problem solving and mental math strategies.

In writing:
We are working on organization and using a variety of different ways to plan a story.  Our focus is on creating stories with a beginning, middle, and end.  We will be looking at a variety of author leads and learning how authors use leads to hook readers.

In reading:
We are continuing with our author study.  We will be using author's writing to learn about antonyms and synonyms.

Around the School:
Please remember to look at the PTA website for Woody Alerts and the campus efolder.

Please remember to send library books and homework folders on Tuesday.

Have a great week.

Ms. Hansen
