Week of November 3, 2014

Dear Parents:

I can't believe it is already November.  What an exciting first nine weeks and more fun to come. Report cards will be in the Friday folder on November 7.  In the Friday folder on October 31, you should have received your child's OLSAT scores.  Please note that at the bottom it states to contact me if you have any questions, however, it should state to contact Mrs. Page.  You will also find two at home assignments for your child to be working on. Both assignments have letters attached to them and I have already explained them to the students.  One assignment is due on Thursday, November 6. This assignment is about media literacy and students are to keep track of the time they spend using media over a four day period.  The second assignment is due on Monday, November 10.  It is to simply create a disguise for Tom the Turkey.  We will be doing a writing project to go along with this. You are welcome to turn in Tom early if he is disguised.

In Science:
We are continuing our study of Sharing the Planet.  We have been learning about man-made and natural resources and how living things must share these.  We will be looking at the consequences of changes to our environment this next week.  We will be conducting an "oil spill" experiment.

In Math:
We continue to work on learning to read and write time to the minute on an analog and digital clock. This is a difficult concept for students to understand, so please use some of your homework time to practice this on an analog clock. We will be starting a study of 3 D shapes this week also.

In Writing:
We have learned some skills for revising and editing.  We are using those skills to revise, edit, and publish a personal narrative.  We have been learning about adding details to our writing using our senses.

In Reading:
We have been learning about procedural text.  We have been talking about the characteristics of procedural text and how knowing these characteristics helps with our comprehension.  We will begin our study of media literacy this week.

Around the school:
Monday is a big celebration for our school.  We are having an assembly to celebrate the school's 40th anniversary.  It will be an exciting day.

Please remember to check the PTA website of Woody's alerts.  The PTA newsletter.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Hansen
